For the past two or three years Ross and I have been cultivating a set of songs for bedtime. He plays his guitar and we switch up the melody and harmony. We have about thirty songs that we cycle through. A bunch of them are Scottish, English, and American folk songs; we have some contemporary songs, a couple classic kids songs, a hymn or two, and some primary songs.
One of my new year resolutions was to illustrate the bedtime songs and hang them up in the kids room. I think this is one of the resolutions that I will actually keep. Two weeks ago I finished my first two illustrations:
Oh Flower of Scotland was added to the set list last year when Ross discovered The Corries. My sister-in-law, Kathryn sketched this out for me over the Christmas break.
If You Could Hie To Kolob has been one of the bedtime songs since we first started singing to the kids. Kathryn helped with the initial sketch again.
Last week I finished two more:
I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon from Sesame Street is the most recent addition to bedtime. Ali Hansen suggested it at Thanksgiving time and Kathryn helped with the concept. 
Molly Malone is the illustration I have been working on the longest. Ross found the song a year or so ago and I started cutting it last September. I’m still not completely happy with it, but I’m so sick of working on it that I hung it up anyway. 
Yesterday I sketched out the next two songs.
Orphan Girl was written by Gillian Welch, but I love the Crooked Still Version. We’ve been singing that one since before we had kids and it has evolved a lot through the years.
Rock Island Line by Lead Belly is a classic that we heard for the first time last year. When we heard him sing our mouths both just fell open and we knew we had to add it to the set. If you click on the link, the song doesn’t start until about 1:08.
I’m pretty excited about how this project is turning out and the kids like having something to look at while we sing.
